Overview of Senatorial year in Student Government Association

This past academic year at Western Kentucky University I had been elected to be a senator in our SGA, and serve my campus community. It was a whirlwind of excitement, controversy and fun. I am really looking forward to my second semester inside SGA.
I think my views and beliefs set me aside of most of my colleagues inside of the Senate Chambers. I debated against most bills brought up, supported few that I believed in and even co-authored a bill.
When debating I made sure my heart and mind were in the right place and saying appropriate words so no one got offended and understood my message. I got such excitement knowing my voice was being heard and affecting our campus in a positive way. It's really like nothing else when the Speaker of Senate calls your name for a pro or a con on a resolution, I loved it.
Topics I debated were about a smoking ban, or making the campus a "wet" campus, taking away sectarian prayers, and a few more. Topics I supported were, making campus greener by using recyclable to go boxes, keeping of our blue light system (press button and campus police comes to your location) and a few more.
I chose my debates based on what I personally felt like didn't discriminate against anyone, didn't harm anyone, also what would keep campus safe and improve the quality of living.
In the resolution I co-authored was made to change election codes, because a few people inside of SGA broke the codes, that were silly in the first place. I decided to support this because it's the right and logical thing to do, to help improve campaigning for the future senators and so on.
I can't wait to see what next semester brings, but I hope after this spring's elections it brings more people as passionate as I am to our Chambers.
